Kickstarter Ends Today for Adventurer Conqueror King

There’s a fair chance you’re interested in domain-level campaigns and the progression that gets characters there through sandbox play; from where I sit, this seems to be one of the hot topics in the old school renaissance right now. It’s maybe less likely that you’re reading The Mule Abides and don’t know about our Kickstarter for Adventurer Conqueror King, since it’s a horse I’ve been flogging for a while now.

What you might not know – especially since I buried the lede in my last post – is that this horse is about to cross the finish line when our Kickstarter ends later today.

You don’t have to support it now to eventually get the finished product. Thanks to our 227 backers we have 275% of the funding we’ll need to make Adventurer Conqueror King System available in game stores, through our website, etc. And after hitting our first bonus goal our first supplement,  the Domains of War mass-combat system, will also be released soon through the usual routes. What you will miss out on if you don’t get in before the Kickstarter period ends is:

  • the ability to watch successive drafts of the core system and the Domains of War grow from their current playable-and-fun state towards the loftiest aims we can set for them
  • access to the developer’s forums where you can help shape the development of the game over the next few months and make sure its aims are the ones that matter to you
  • downloads of the materials we’ve developed for the Gen Con demo, like the form-fillable character sheets, the Borderlands player’s maps, and the counters for mass combat, which you can use to start running your own playtests (doing so for four days non-stop is optional)
  • (at the King of Kings donor reward level) one of the signed pre-release copies of the beta rules which, I humbly submit, already look better than a third of the finished books I see on the Gen Con exhibit floor & will only get better with illustration
  • (at the Visionary reward level) the opportunity to tell project artist Ryan Browning what you want to see him illustrate; the piece above is an example, based on the player’s experience playing an assassin in Greg’s campaign

Everyone who backs us now also gets to be part of the excitement of helping us push for our final bonus goal: if we raise three times our original target, we’ll set up a game of Adventurer Conqueror King for each of our backers via Google+ hangout. We are currently $997 away from this bonus, with five hours remaining; as it so happens, there is one $1,000 Patron Deity reward left to be claimed…

Doing this Kickstarter has been a fantastic experience for me and the rest of the Autarch crew, and it’s all due to the fact that y’all have shared the experience. If you’ve been thinking about becoming part of it, now is the time.

    I only discovered your site and your game now, hours after the backing finished. Adventurer, Conqueror, King looks exactly like the kind of game I’d like to play. I hope I can still get in on this and see what you’re doing with it. I hope someday I’ll get the chance to play it with you all.

    I’m thrilled with it so far. I want to get my hands on the empire gazeteer. Rolled up a character for my brother so we can google+ a long range campaign this fall. He fell in love with the blog entry at Autarch that summarizes the empire, the implied setting, etc. Convicted on trumped up charges and sentenced to 10 years in the salt mines, this ex legionary’s war galley sank during a storm. He washed up on the shores near Ft Aure, naked and shackled to a sheared oar…

    I’m quickly laying out the Bloodlands as a kind of third century Rome in the far west with hordes of fantasy analogues to Picts, Saxons, Gauls, and a variation on Lovecraft’s Tcho-Tcho and other tribes who venerate Cthonic gods…There’s a corrupt Prefect of House Drakomir exiled from the heart of the empire and a disgraced legate in charge of a cruel and infamous Cohort in charge of security, and lots of conflict between the Imperial occupiers who’ve interbred with the locals for many years, the pureblood (so to speak) Imperials and the tribes who want to rape, pillage and burn the Blood Lands to a fine powder. I’m just whipping it all up based on the Borderlands map. Not sure on the distances. I suspect the outposts and towns are all a day’s walk (8 leagues) apart, but not sure….

    In any event, even in its beta state, the system oozes OS fidelity and the domain rules (can’t wait for Hill Cantons to get his out as well) look as if they’ll provide the tools for my math-challenged self to finally run a scalable and meaningful end game.

    Addendum–Not that my brother needed much of a pitch, but I pared my concept of how I mean to approach this game and setting–Gladiator meets Lovecraft. Say no more, say no more!

    I got to play a couple hours of the game (GM’d by Alex) and can vouch that this is a BLAST.

    We played pretty high level characters, “kings” as it were. The gameplay pacing and tone is instantly recognizable to D&D players.

    The game mechanic is streamlined in a very elegant way, but still feels decidedly “old school” (most every roll works like a saving throw, roll X or better).

    There’s great flavor in the classes and spells, you’re still picking a single race/class designation, but there are more options for demihumans and human characters.

    I’m stoked to get my fancy kickstarter edition!

    Yes, we will sell the hardcopy+PDF as a bundle and are setting uo our website to take pre-orders as well, in which case you also get the Domains of War PDF and developer forum access.

    Is it still possible to buy in and get the playtest rules pdf? When is the full game scheduled to come out?
